Empowering Through Education: Mohit Kamboj feels it’s key to uplifting transgenders

In a country as diverse and culturally rich as India, the journey towards equality and inclusion has many layers. One of the most urgent, yet often overlooked aspects is the educational empowerment of the transgender community. Education, as history and common sense both affirm, is the most powerful catalyst for change. For the transgender community which has been marginalised for generations it holds the key to true dignity, opportunity and societal acceptance.

The Power of Education

Education doesn’t just open doors, it breaks down walls. For transgender individuals, gaining access to quality education is often the first step towards reclaiming agency over their lives. Unfortunately, due to systemic discrimination, bullying, family rejection and lack of support infrastructure, many transgender individuals are forced to drop out of school or are denied educational opportunities altogether.

Changing this reality starts with recognition. Recognizing that transgender individuals are equal stakeholders in our society and that their dreams, capabilities and rights are just as valid. By investing in their education, we not only uplift a community, we enrich the entire nation.

Government and Institutional Support

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in policy and awareness. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, mandates the prohibition of discrimination in educational institutions. Some universities have introduced transgender-inclusive policies, scholarship schemes and even gender-neutral facilities. While these are promising steps, much more needs to be done in terms of implementation, monitoring and grassroots outreach.

Creating Safe and Inclusive Learning Spaces

True inclusion starts with culture. Schools and colleges must become safe havens, not battlegrounds. Sensitisation of teachers, counsellors and students is critical. Curriculum reforms that introduce gender diversity and LGBTQIA+ history and issues can foster empathy and reduce prejudice from an early age.

Peer support groups, mentorship programs and mental health services tailored to the needs of transgender students can go a long way in helping them thrive academically and socially. Education should not just be about textbooks, it should be about building confident, capable and compassionate citizens.

Beyond Classrooms: Vocational and Skill Development

While formal education is important, vocational training and skill development is equally important. Many transgender individuals, especially those who have been out of the formal education system, can benefit from learning market-relevant skills that includes digital literacy to entrepreneurship to arts and crafts. Several NGOs and private organisations are working in this space, but a nationwide, structured effort could make a lasting impact.

Creating employment linkages through job fairs, partnerships with MSMEs and inclusive hiring practices will complete the circle of empowerment. The goal is not charity but equal opportunity.

Role Models and Representation

Nothing inspires more than success stories. When transgender doctors, lawyers, artists, athletes and entrepreneurs are celebrated for their achievements, they become powerful role models for others in the community. Education fuels these stories as it enables them. It’s time we share and amplify these narratives, not just during Pride Month but throughout the year.

A Shared Responsibility

Uplifting the transgender community through education is not just the responsibility of the government or NGOs. It’s a shared mission—parents, teachers, students, corporates, media and citizens all have a role to play. Inclusion must become a daily practice, not just a policy statement.

Education is not a privilege, but a fundamental right. When we ensure that transgender individuals have equal access to education, we are not just empowering them; we are taking a step toward building a more humane, just and progressive society.
